E-Learning Objective: Seeing through the eyes of a foreigner

Everyday we read or hear about foreigner's leaving their own country whether by choice, politics, safety, poverty stricken circumstances, violence or by force (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2005). Here in Australia, we are very lucky and may take for granted our free and safe way of living. With increased media coverage and major electoral promises, the word "refugee" or "Asylum seeker" often has a negative connotation. In my opinion most things that we read and hear about through the media relating to "refugee's and Asylum seekers" is fact but is also coupled with fiction and bias to create a good story that sells. However, what is truly fact, and what is fiction? What often gets forgotten is why these people are fleeing their countries and why they are seeking refuge in our country. The purpose of this e-learning journey has been designed for year 7 learners. It is specifically created with the purpose of allowing the learners to explore what it might actually be like to be one of these people seeking to live in our country. This journey will prompt the learners to ask questions like what circumstances have caused these people to flee their own country and what makes Australia a country worth fleeing to? It will also help foster an appreciation of what we actually have in Australia, and develop empathy and compassion for others less fortunate. Throughout the journey, learners will be guided to reflect and make judgements on the Australian way of life in comparison to a refugee's way of life and ultimately decide if they would change anything to make Australia a better place to live for everyone. Learner's will be given the chance to build knowledge using a variety of digital tools and technologies to help form and reflect on their own personal opinions.
